Below are important safety guidelines to help you use, store, and handle propane safely.
General Precautions When Using Propane
Reading Your Propane Tank Gauge
Propane tanks are considered full when the gauge reads 80% (the empty 20% allows for propane vapor expansion). If the gauge reads below 20%, contact us right away at (Local Store Number) for delivery.
Shutting Off Your Propane Tank
If you think your portable propane tank or grill tank is leaking and it is safe to turn off the tank valve, turn it to the right (clockwise). If you are unable to turn off the valve, leave the area immediately and dial 911 or call your local fire department. Before using your grill again, have a qualified professional inspect both your grill and tank.
Propane Tank Storage
Storing propane tanks outdoors is safe, but always choose a location away from living areas.
- Ensure the gas valve is in the OFF position when storing your tank.
- NEVER store your propane tank inside your home or vehicle.
- ALWAYS store tanks upright on stable surfaces.
- Avoid storing tanks in direct sunlight for long periods.
- Do not expose tanks to temperatures 120°F (49°C) or higher.
- Propane is not affected by freezing temperatures.
NEVER store your tank on its side or upside down.
Handling and Transporting Small Cylinders
- Always transport cylinders in an upright position and ensure they are secured during transport.
- Do not leave cylinders in hot vehicles.
- Check for rust, dents, or potential leaks before use
Pilot Lights
Re-lighting your pilot light can be dangerous. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and warnings for your appliance. If you are unsure, contact a trained professional or our customer service team for assistance.
When You Are Away From Home
If you will be away from home for an extended period:
- Shut off all propane supply valves, including the main tank valve and the supply valves for each appliance.
- When you return, IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU CALL US to conduct a leak check before turning the propane supply back on.
- After confirming there are no leaks, we can assist with re-lighting pilot lights if needed.
Extreme Weather Conditions
Heat & Dry Conditions
Keep a 10-foot radius around your propane tank and propane grill clear of dry materials that could ignite.
Flooding, High Winds, or Storms
During severe weather, propane tanks can shift, float, or become damaged:
- Shifting tanks can damage gas lines.
- Water or debris can enter regulators, causing safety issues.
If you question the safety of your current situation:
- Leave the area immediately.
- Alert us.
- Have your property inspected by a trained professional before re-entering.
